The Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) is the standardized, nationally normed assessment program that enables postsecondary institutions to measure, evaluate, and enhance the outcomes of their general education programs. Two test topics are selected each year. The 2006 program includes Reading and Math.

Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) was conducted in October 1999. The Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) is administered on campus every spring for selected subjects. This assessment activity helps to validate the quality of Northeast’s instructional program.
CAAP can be used to:
  • Satisfy accreditation and accountability reporting requirements.
  • Measure students' achievement levels on a group and individual basis.
  • Compare students' achievement levels with national user norms.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of general education programs.
  • Document the performance gain of students' achievement levels over time.
  • Analyze what interventions may be necessary to enhance results.
  • Determine student eligibility for upper-division studies.
  • Advise individual students how to achieve academic success.

There are several sections on the test-Reading, Mathematics, Science, Critical Thinking, Writing Skills, and Writing Essay. Except for the essay portion, all tests are multiple choice format, and you’ll have 50 minutes to complete each section. You may bring a calculator if you wish. Because of the nature of the exam, you will not necessarily receive all your scores, but you will be informed of how you did on selected tests, and be able to compare that with others’ scores.

The CAAP can help college administrators and faculty to see weak spots in their programs, and compare themselves to colleges nationwide. Your academic adviser will also be able to use your scores to help you identify your various strengths and weaknesses, and suggest adjustments to your program if they feel it’s necessary. You’ll usually take the test after you’ve completed the core requirements at your college.
