BACKGROUND

CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the today, helping students of a wide range of ages earn credit for what they already know, regardless of how that knowledge was acquired. By receiving a satisfactory score, students can earn from 3 to 12 college credits toward a college degree for each CLEP exam taken, depending on the exam subject and the policy of the college or university.

Minnesota Statute 120B.131, recently amended, provides for reimbursement of CLEP test fees for
Minnesota public and non-public high school students who have successfully completed one or more rigorous courses in high school in the same subject as each examination they wish to take.
In July 2005, the Minnesota legislature passed a law entitled “Get Ready, Get Credit,” to encourage public high school students to earn college credit while in high school.  Subject areas include: business, composition and literature, foreign languages, history and social sciences, science, and mathematics.  The funding is available for all high school students regardless of score.

  • CLEP Exams are available in 34 college-level introductory subjects.
  • More than 2,900 colleges grant undergraduate credit for CLEP.
  • Institutions grant from 3 to 12 college credits for each CLEP exam taken.
  • More than 1,300 colleges administer the exams.
  • CLEP is administered on computer and exams are available year-round.
  • The tests are timed and 90 minutes long.
  • With the exception of English Composition with Essay, exams are composed primarily of multiple-choice questions. Some mathematics exams include fill-in type questions.
  • All exams are scored on a scale of 20 to 80 and the recommended credit-granting score for all exams is 50, a score representative of a grade of C.
  • Score reports are available immediately upon completion of the exam. Students know right away how they performed.
  • Each exam costs $60. Test centers usually charge $15 to cover administration costs.
  • More than 5 million people have taken CLEP exams since its inception in 1967.
