The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Examination is the most effective vehicle known for measuring minimum competency in the practice of interior design. NCIDQ maintains minimum eligibility requirements to enter the examination process and earn the NCIDQ Certificate.

The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) assists interior designers in obtaining a broad range of quality professional experience. The program provides a structure for the essential transition between formal education and professional practice, recognizing the differences between classroom and workplace.
The National Council for Interior Design Qualification prepares and administers a basic professional competency examination. The core purpose of NCIDQ is to protect the health, life safety and welfare of the public by establishing standards of competence in the practice of interior design. They serve to identify to the public those interior designers who have met the minimum standards for professional practice by passing the NCIDQ examination.

Certification by NCIDQ gives the interior designer a sense of personal achievement and contributes not only to the individuals’ professional recognition but to the recognition to the profession as a whole. NCIDQ serves as a qualifier for professional membership within interior design organizations and for non- affiliates, represents a voluntary individual accomplishment.

NCIDQ certification, therefore, provides interior designers with peer recognition, allows reciprocity to practice in licensed jurisdictions, and promotes public acceptance through awareness of a profession with certified practitioners. NCIDQ encourages the use of the designation "NCIDQ Certified" along with the issued certificate number on qualified practitioners' business forms, letterheads and business cards. Professional certification is often confused with similar terms, such as accreditation and licensing. Certification itself may take many forms.
