The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) provides registration services to EMS providers from across the nation. The NREMT is a non-profit, non-governmental, free standing agency.

The NREMT exams process includes a written test and practical stations. The EMT-B and EMT-I written tests contain 150 multiple-choice questions on airway and breathing, cardiology, trauma, medical, obstetrics and pediatrics, and operations. There are 200 questions on the EMT-P test. Questions are not divided into nice categories.

NREMT registers EMS providers at four levels:

  • First Responder
  • EMT Basic
  • EMT Intermediate (’85 and ’99)
  • Paramedic
The NREMT does not provide services such as educational conferences, EMS issue identification and endorsement, collective bargaining services, job placement, lobbying, educational materials or other association type services. The NREMT verifies through a system of registration and re-registration competency of providers to safely and effectively practice. The NREMT's policies are developed by a Board of Directors comprising many national EMS organizations.

The NREMT's registration services are part of the licensure process for EMT's in 39 states. The Registry works closely or directly with State Offices of Emergency Medical Services in all 50 states to accomplish their mission. The most visible function of the NREMT is examination development and administration. Using a psychometrically sound and legally defensible process, the NREMT exerts great efforts to assure examinations are fair to both the public and the candidate.
