Test Background Information

In the 1950s, ten independent school admission officers gathered to discuss the need for a common admission test. Because academic programs and standards among elementary and pre-secondary schools differed so widely, it was difficult to compare academic ability based on grades and other school-specific performance measures. As a result, students applying to several schools had to take multiple tests.

In 1957, the Secondary School Admission Test Board was formed to develop the SSAT. Through ETS, the first SSAT was administered to just over 5,000 boarding students. The testing program filled a dramatic need and grew continuously to its current stature as the premier admission testing organization for secondary schools.

Today the organization has over 700 member institutions, including secondary schools, educators and consultants, and administers and oversees SSAT testing to close to 60,000 students in 76 countries all year long.

Forging new ground in test administration, SSATB assumed all responsibility for test development and administration from ETS in 1993 and today is the only truly independent test organization in the country. Such independence is especially significant at a time when other educational testing and counseling organizations are merging with or are being redefined by the culture of larger business interests.

As an organization for school educators run by school educators, the premises that drive SSATB are simple but challenging: to continue our role as the testing organization that surpasses all others in its relevance to the broadest range of member needs…to be knowledgeable and strategically sound…efficient and executionally thorough…and always reaching out to cross new testing and technological frontiers.
