The COMPASS is a computerized adaptive test from ACT that measures skills in reading, writing and mathematics to determine readiness for college-level courses in these areas.

The COMPASS Placement Test has two purposes. First, it checks whether students have the skills to succeed in college-level courses. Second, it helps to place students in whatever courses they are ready for, either college-level courses or courses to prepare them for college-level courses.
COMPASS is different from other tests because it is adaptive. If you answer easy questions correctly, it will give you harder ones. The answers you give determine the number of questions. Since there is no time limit, you can complete the test at your own pace, and your test will be different from your classmates. The length of time that it will take to complete the entire exam will of course vary, but for most people it will take about two hours. COMPASS Assessment is only one component in a comprehensive new student orientation program designed to also provide appropriate academic advisement and course placement.

Students are assessed to determine whether or not there is a deficiency in any of the basic skills areas. These areas include tests for proficiency in English, reading, and mathematics. Assessment results suggest appropriate placement in developmental courses: English 90, 93; reading 90, 93; math 80, 90, 93. Any combination of these courses is possible depending on the strengths or weaknesses of the individual student.

COMPASS maximizes the effectiveness of your placement program with powerful technology and user-friendly features. The system offers improved flexibility and control of testing logistics, while delivering accurate results. You can also count on ACT to provide a high level of support as you implement and use COMPASS and to keep you up-to-date on developments.
