West-B stands for Washington Educator Skills Test - Basic. It is the basic skills test used throughout the state of Washington. The Basic Skills Test Prep Course provides you with everything you need to pass your state's exam in an easy-to-understand, self-paced learning environment.

These basic skill tests assess your readiness for entering a college of education and the teaching profession. These are entry-level skills to begin education studies, student teach and obtain a teaching certificate. Your basic skills will be tested. You should acquire information and strategy to match the difficulty of the exam.

The Washington Educator Skills Test—Basic (WEST–B) is criterion referenced and objective based. A criterion-referenced test is designed to measure a candidate’s knowledge and skills in relation to an established standard, rather than in relation to the performance of other candidates. The explicit purpose of the WEST–B is to help identify those candidates with the required level of basic skills to perform successfully in an educator preparation program or as a teacher in a public school classroom.

The WEST–B contains three separate subtests: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. The Reading and Mathematics subtests each consist of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions. The Writing subtest consists of approximately 50 multiple-choice questions and two writing prompts.
