The Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board test (PLAB) is the main route by which International Medical Graduates (IMGs) demonstrate that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice medicine in the .
 
The General Medical Council is the statutory body responsible for the regulation and standards of the medical profession in the UK. In order to carry out any sort of medical work or training, a doctor must first obtain registration with the GMC. Overseas doctors who are seeking limited registration must first pass, or be exempted from the PLAB test.

The PLAB test is relevant for overseas qualified doctors. For those wishing to take up a period of limited registration, require evidence that the doctor has the necessary skills and knowledge to practice in the . The PLAB test - so called because it is set by the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board - is specifically designed to assess doctors' ability to work safely in a first appointment as a senior house officer in a hospital in the National Health Service (NHS).

 The PLAB test has 2 parts:

  • Has EMQs (extended matching questions) and SBAs (Single Best Answer questions), this part is conducted in a number of countries including ,, , , .

  • Part 2: Consists of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). This Part is available only in U.S. It consists of 14 clinical stations, a pilot station and a rest station. The pilot station is usually unannounced and mixed with the clinical stations. The marks for the pilot station do not count towards the final score. All the stations are of five minutes duration. The level of difficulty of the clinical part of the PLAB exam is set at the level of competence of a senior house officer (SHO) in a first appointment in a hospital. The skills assessed in this exam are: Clinical examination, Practical skills, Communication skills, History taking.
